Workshops

The CULTIVATING WELLNESS team presents workshops for staff and volunteers on all aspects of therapeutic gardening, from running a new program to practical hands-on gardening skills.  The workshops are also suitable for carers and family wanting to include a garden at home.  All courses can be tailored to meet individual needs and can be held onsite if preferred (price on application).

Workshops are either full day or half day.  Topics include:

Gardening as Therapy   NEW PRICE   $185 p.p.
(Full day course, $185 p.p includes sandwich lunch & reference folder with notes and exercises during the course)
Introduction to horticultural therapy.  Discover how gardening programs can be used in healthcare and human services for social, therapeutic and vocational goals. See how modified tools and equipment can achieve comfort and independence.  Look at a variety of gardening activities to suit all levels of ability.  Topics also covered – record keeping & documentation, funding & promoting the program.  Simulated gardening activity held during the day.

Designing a Healing Garden (1/2 day, $110 p.p)
Gardens that care:  Planning outdoor environments for people with all ability levels.  Examine specific design features that can enable inclusion of all people. This workshop is conducted by a landscape architect specialising in sensory gardens for healing and therapeutic purposes.

Sensory Gardens (1/2 day, $110 p.p)
Discover how a garden can stimulate all 5 senses and see how to incorporate sensory features into your garden. Examine some therapeutic gardening activities to stimulate all 5 senses and see how these can be linked back to client goals. Look at ways to help reduce sensory overload in some clients.

Veggie Garden for Aged Care/Disability (1/2 day, $110 p.p)
This workshop will teach you the fundamentals for growing vegetables in pots as well as in garden beds.  A productive gardening program helps provide food for clients and herb plants for sale.  Identify the 5 biggest mistakes people commonly make when trying to grow vegetables and how to avoid them.  Vegetable gardens can more effectively engage older male clients and can compliment other programs like healthy eating and cooking on a budget.

Floral Art & Craft from the Garden (1/2 day, $110 p.p)
Art and craft activities can have a gardening theme.  Ideas for involving clients in artistic and creative projects using elements of the garden are given in this workshop.  Great for rainy day programming when the garden is less accessible due to inclement weather. Suggested projects include: photography, mosaics, painting, dried flowers, postcards & bookmarks and flower arranging.

Practical Gardening For Seniors (1/2 day, $110 p.p)
This workshop is designed to give staff and carers some basic practical gardening skills.  Skills will include sowing seeds, potting up seedlings, fertilising and mulching gardenings, taking plant cuttings and dividing perennial plants.  Some pruning techniques will also be demonstrated.  Skills and techniques will depend on the seasonal time of year.

Most workshops can be modified for staff development programs on site.  Minimum numbers apply.
